A form of Ayurvedic medicine that involves massage of the body with large amounts of warm oil. The oil is pre-medicated with herbs for specific conditions. Increased circulation, especially to nerve endings, toning of the muscles and the whole physiology, calming for the nerves, lubrication of the joints, Increased mental alertness, improved elimination of impurities from the body, softer, smoother skin, increased levels of stamina through the day, better, deeper sleep at night. Usually recommended to clients who take the Ayurvedic consultation first.
Shirodhara is an amazing, unique body therapy that pours medicated oil on the forehead with a rhythmic, continuous flow. Shirodhara has a profound impact on the nervous system. That means, the treatment directly and immediately calms, relaxes and has a cleansing effect on the mind and nerves. In the western alternative medicine world, I personally do not know of another therapy that has a similar impact on the nervous system, apart from an established meditation practice. Who benefits?! Anyone who wants to slow down and calm the mind, people who experience insomnia, PTSD, hypertension…
Basti or poultice therapy
In a basti, a specific problematic area of the body is targeted such as the lower back, the neck or knees…the heart area or the joints of the body, a bowl of oil is then created to pull out the extra Vata dosha of the area. Depending on the condition, this therapy might be applied by creating a herbal poultice and dabbed for about 15-20 minutes. This therapy is for all types of rheumatism, arthritis, pain in the joints, emaciation of limbs, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and certain kinds of skin diseases. An ayurvedic consultation session is recommended before such applications.
