Discover the Heart of Community at Modo Yoga’s Be Community Open House

This January and February, Modo Yoga studios across the community are opening their doors to welcome you during our Be Community Open House. Each participating studio is offering free classes, workshops, and events designed to inspire and connect.

Dates and activities vary by location, so check with your local Modo Yoga studio to see if they are participating, when, and for all the details about what’s happening near you.

✨ Whether you’re new to yoga or a seasoned pro, our open houses are the perfect way to dive into the world of Modo. Come experience the magic—we’d love to see you there!

When we think of an open house, we often think of an event meant to showcase a new space that is just opening for the first time.  But over the past few years, many Modo Yoga studios have reimagined this concept, embracing the tradition of an annual open house. In this Journal entry, Modo Co-Founder Jess Robertson sits down with longtime, beloved studio owner Jill Holden to explore why hosting open houses has become a meaningful way to connect with her community in St. John’s, Newfoundland year after year.

Jill: I do love a good open house!  Let’s see… an open house is a fun, high-energy day for students that are new to Modo to get the chance to experience a sense of what our community is all about. Our studio crew of energy exchangers, front of house staff, and instructors love to get involved and play a role in welcoming new students, from the moment they step into the studio, to studio tours, with a chance to meet instructors and ask questions.

Jill: Our Open House days are packed with exciting activities. In addition to free classes running throughout the day, we often include an Intro to Modo class and add extra classes to the schedule to showcase the variety of styles we offer. Guests can also enjoy studio tours, healthy snacks and refreshments, and even capture their “first class at Modo” moment with an optional photo for social media. To top it off, we feature a special promotion on our Intro Month Pass and hold a prize draw for class participants.

Jill: I was surprised that even after being open for so many years the open house always attracts so many new Modo students in our little city.  It also inspires former students to return and reconnect to their practice.

Jill: The new year is a time when so many people are looking for a fresh start. Hosting an open house provides the perfect opportunity for growth, connection, and community building. At our studio, we regularly make small updates to enhance the space. This year, we’re wrapping up a lobby refresh, creating a more welcoming and relaxing area for students to enjoy before and after classes. An annual open house gives us the chance to share our excitement about these updates and the studio as a whole. January is when people often explore new activities and lifestyle changes, and we want everyone to see how amazing hot yoga—and our community—can be, especially during our long East Coast winters! It’s also a great way to welcome newcomers, which in turn inspires our existing students to invite their friends to try yoga and experience what our community is all about.

Jill: Yes for sure.  Regular students come to celebrate, hang out at their second home, and share it with their friends and family. Our existing members are the foundation of the community we’ve built, and it’s exciting for them to share a practice and a space they love with others. It also inspires students to try a different class style or to reconnect to a class style they haven’t attended in a while. It helps reinvigorate their commitment to the studio by reminding them of the supportive and fun community that they helped to create.

Jill: It’s a no-pressure opportunity to explore the studio space, experience our community vibe, meet our staff and instructors, and try a variety of class styles—all for free, which people definitely like! As you mentioned, it can also feel less intimidating to try yoga on a day when many like-minded beginners are also giving it a go. This creates a sense of beginner’s mind in so many ways—not just for new students, but for returning students and even our instructors too.
