Plant-based eating has been all the rage lately, and while it may feel a little off putting in what seems like another passing trend, I’m here to explain why it’s different from the rest. You do not need to identify with a label to choose to add more plant-based options to your diet, it’s simply a way of eating. Personally, the reason I choose to eat mostly plant-based is ultimately because I feel better. I’m not a vegan, but that doesn’t really matter. While I eat primarily vegetarian, I choose to eat dairy, eggs, and the occasional meat (usually while out, rarely at home). This is what works for me, my body, and my lifestyle. Chances are, you approach food entirely differently, and that’s 100% okay. There isn’t one right way to eat, but there are choices that can be made that will ultimately help you, and our planet, feel better. It all comes down to choice and deciding what you are going to eat. Remember, just because something is listed as vegan or gluten free, it doesn’t mean it’s healthy or good for you. Sometimes, these products can be filled with processed ingredients that throw off any health benefits these products claim to provide. Instead, we’re better off following Michael Pollan’s wise advice: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” In a society that’s obsessed with what and how to eat, following these simple words just makes sense. In fact, many cultures eat this way already, it’s nothing new. Essentially, we are shifting our habits to benefit from what’s already out there. A plant-based lifestyle is one of colourful abundance. It is one filled with fulfilling, nourishing meals as opposed to one of restrictions. If you don’t know where to start, know that you don’t have to go all the way. If you want to keep dairy and meat in your diet, consider where you are getting these items from and the quantity in which you are consuming them. You can still enjoy these options while making better choices by purchasing locally and consuming these products less frequently. We now have so many wonderful options available to us in Thunder Bay that offer plant-based options. Here are some of our favourites to check out, many of which are near our Modo studio! Want to try some recipes? Here are a few of our favourite resources with mainly vegetarian options that often include vegan adaptations. It takes some time figuring out what to try, what you like and how much you need, but I encourage you to approach this positively. Don’t label foods as “good” or “bad”, simply ask yourself if it feels good for you. It’s not a diet to try or a trend to follow—it is a different way of eating. |
