Karma Programs + Partnerships

Since 2004, Modo Studios have collectively raised over 3.2 million dollars. Each week, all Modo Yoga studios offer at least one PWYC donation class to raise funds for local and international not-for-profit organizations to we reach out, give back, and help support positive change. This program align with our Be Accessible pillar by offering yoga classes at a reduced price, though it should be noted that no one is turned away from MYBW for financial reasons. Please speak to a manager to discuss a sliding scale if needed.

In 2020, our Karma Partners are:
  • BLACK LIVES MATTER founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.
  • NAACP The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons and to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race.
  • THE GENWELL PROJECT is a free, open-sourced, global Human Connection Movement whose mission is to make the world a happier and healthier place by reminding people about the importance of face to face social connection and inspiring them to take action (registered Canadian NFP).
  • CANADIAN RED CROSS in support of the Australian bushfires.

 

2019  ~ raised $9396.65 ~ our Karma Partners were:

  • WATER AID an international not-for-profit, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. Only by tackling these three essentials in ways that last can people change their lives for good.
  • JUNGLEKEEPERS  is a project of the Multiplier, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that helps protect and foster a healthy, sustainable, resilient, and equitable world by preserving our Peruvian rainforest.
  • RAINBOW RAILROAD exists to help vulnerable LGBTQI people get out of dangerous environments to somewhere safe. In the spirit of and with an homage to the Underground Railroad, the mission of Rainbow Railroad is to help these people as they seek safe haven from state-enabled violence, murder or persecution. Through funds collected by people like you, we’re able to support, provide information, and help to arrange safe transportation for these people to somewhere in the world where they can live their lives in freedom.
  • NA-MA-RES are traditional Elders & teachers, case managers, counselors, client care and support workers, street outreach workers, housing support and aftercare workers, Registered Nurses, Oshkabaywis (spiritual helpers), and a life skills coordinator. Na-Me-Res also partners with psychiatrists, doctors, and many other community service providers. Na-Me-Res is a registered charity that began in 1985 offering emergency shelter to Toronto-based Aboriginal men who were without a place to live. Today, the Na-Me-Res Housing initiatives include a 69-bed emergency shelter in Toronto, a nationally recognized transitional housing program, and O’Gitchidaa Mushkiki Wigwam, a long-term independent housing initiative. Programming such as: cultural connection and identity via sweat lodge, hand drumming, and traditional teachings; Medicine Wheel Garden; Elder outreach for street homeless men to connect with their culture; life skills workshops on healthy living, literacy, financial literacy, and employment; integration assistance for men leaving the criminal justice system; addiction and mental health support and counseling; and workshops on creative writing, photography, and Reiki
  • HARD FEELINGS TORONTO is an innovative, welcoming community of professional counsellors who provide low-cost services and support with a storefront that sells carefully curated books, resources, and self-care items to help build and sustain stronger mental health. Their mission is to reduce barriers and increase access to mental health supports and resources through an innovative community of practice.
  • LIONS FOUNDATION OF CANADA DOG GUIDES are a preeminent national training school and charity that assists individuals with disabilities through specialized Dog Guide programming for vision, hearing, seizure, autism assistance, diabetic alert, and more. These Dog Guides are provided at no cost to eligible Canadians, cost $25,000 to train and place each guide dog. The Foundation relies 100% on donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations and does not receive any government funding.
  • HORIZONS FOR YOUT shelter, prepare and guide homeless and at-risk youth to achieve wellness and become contributing community members. A sharing and growing community where everyone has a home. Horizons for youth has a 24-hour intake service, open 365 days a year and serves over 40,000 meals and 30,000 snacks each year, offers hundreds of workshops and field trips each year, which help our youth gain the skills needed to live independently.
  • AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL is a global movement of over 70 million people in more than 150 countries working together to protect and promote human rights. Their vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments.
  • NEW LEAF YOGA FOUNDATION is on a mission to reduce violence and increase peace in the lives of youth and in communities, New Leaf offers mindfulness and yoga-based life skills programs.

  • ANISHNAWBE HEALTH TORONTO recovers, records and promotes Traditional Aboriginal practices at its core; its model of health care is based on Traditional practices and approaches and are reflected in the design of its programs and services.
  • COVENANT HOUSE TORONTO is the largest agency in Canada serving youth who are homeless, trafficked, or at risk.
  • AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL is a global movement of over 70 million people in more than 150 countries working together to protect and promote human rights. Their vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments.
  • NEW LEAF YOGA FOUNDATION is on a mission to reduce violence and increase peace in the lives of youth and in communities, New Leaf offers mindfulness and yoga-based life skills programs.

  • MADISON COMMUNITY SERVICES exists to promote the health, recovery, and community integration of persons with mental health challenges through advocacy, education, and the provision of a broad range of high-quality community-based support services.
  • 350.org uses community action, strong science and legal expertise to educate, legislate, and take direct action to protect our climate for future generations.
  • BLACK DOG RESCUE is a foster-based rescue in the GTA specializing in finding homes for northern dogs found as strays. They also supply vetting services and dog supplies to pet owners living in poverty or homeless in the GTA.
  • TORONTO RAPE CENTRE The Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape (TRCC/MWAR) is a grassroots, women-run collective working towards a violence-free world by providing anti-oppressive, feminist peer support to survivors of sexual violence through support, education, and activism. The TRCC/MWAR stands with and supports Black survivors and our Black community members. Gendered violence doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Rape culture is inherently tied to white supremacist settler colonialism, which contributes to Black Canadians facing higher rates of violence.

  • The Stop Food Center delivers its powerful mission to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges inequality.
  • CANADIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY
  • WOMEN’S HABITAT offers a safe, confidential shelter location with all the services needed for women to make a new life for herself and her children. Additionally, they offer access to many programs via the Outreach Centre (ie. support group or individual counseling).
  • STEP STONES FOR YOUTH is an innovative and dynamic charitable organization that provides high-level skill development support to children and youth who are economically disadvantaged and have a history of trauma and abuse.
  • AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL is a global movement of over 70 million people in more than 150 countries working together to protect and promote human rights. Their vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments.
  • NEW LEAF YOGA FOUNDATION is on a mission to reduce violence and increase peace in the lives of youth and in communities, New Leaf offers mindfulness and yoga-based life skills programs.
  • WORLD WILDLIFE FUND (wilderness preservation)
  • JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH provides select legal representation to low-income children and youth in Toronto and vicinity.

 

October 2013 – February 2016 the studio was closed due to litigation with the landlord, who unfortunately won and we were homeless for 2.5 years. 

 

In 2007 – 2013, the studio gave 100% of our karma funds to NEW LEAF YOGA FOUNDATION .We’re waiting to hear back on the total amount and will update here we receive the figure.
