Community Announcement

To our student body, current members of our Virtual Studio, and all those awaiting our reopening —

For nearly four years, we’ve made a fifth floor corner at 1744 rue William the hub for our community. At our second anniversary party, we set out a guest book and it wasn’t surprising to read entries from some of you that read, simply, “This is home.” Two years on, our community is standing, yet that luminous, brick-lined studio space stands locked and empty.

Instead, we’ve all been in our houses and apartments. Maybe you flowed from the family room, breathed in your bedroom, or balanced the basement, as kids or pets made amusing, if uninvited, cameos on Zoom. Or, perhaps you came outside with us: on the canal, in the park, by the river or on the roof. We share these experiences — this virtual space, these parks, this neighbourhood, each other’s energies and presence, online or in person. We commit to ourselves and each other, collectively making community every time and everywhere we unroll our mats. If the space for a yoga community is literally everywhere, then those charming red bricks of rue William start to feel heavy — and costly.

In class, we aim for lightness of breath and body. It’s with this fluidity and mobility in mind that we must, today, say so long to that glowing and story-filled loft, and to Modo Yoga Griffintown as we have all known it.

Make no mistake, this is not goodbye to our community! We are alive, and thriving, as so many of you have joined our virtual and outdoor classes. We are so grateful to share these studios-without-walls with all of you — even though the thing we have missed the most is sharing our warm room, like a warm hug.

As we take this time, with our sister studio in NDG, to furl our sails and find some shelter from this pandemic storm, we are simultaneously charting a new course. Our flagship, Modo Yoga Montreal, remains steadfast. All memberships are still active here, and we eagerly await the date when its doors are permitted to open again. Our Virtual Studio will continue with over 100 livestream classes and replays weekly. Modo Yoga West Island will reopen, too. Come springtime, our outdoor yoga programs will pop-up along the canal and in green spaces around the city, just as last year. By 2022, the world will have transformed yet again. And so will we.

We understand that you most certainly have questions about your memberships, classes and credits. Please, consult our Frequently Asked Questions online. Then, if you still have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support everyone in this transition.

As we say goodbye to this space we briefly called home, we will miss the studio formerly known as Modo Yoga Griffintown (and former home to our friends from Studio Breathe) — but community truly knows no walls. This tent, now folded, is lightweight and mobile, made to popup wherever needed.

We invite all of you to follow our new ventures as they develop. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you on Zoom, on the canal, and at Modo Yoga Montreal.

With love and gratitude,

Sara, Dina, Guillaume, and the entire team at Modo Yoga Griffintown
